knitwear collection “Kadristik”

The knitwear collection draws inspiration from estonian traditions around Katherine’s Day, translating folklore traditions and the surrounding mythology into clothing.

The main material is wool, since the kadripäev traditions center around women and animal keeping. The collection is mainly machine knitted, but also woven on the loom with heddles and includes some hand knitting.

The red rims and circles are inspired by red hems of Estonian traditional skirts, protecting the wearer from evil.

Different pieces for the collection

What could’ve happened if the kadrid started their own religion? They would honour the sun and spin yarn. The sun emits light and gives life, but there lies a warning of an upcoming fate above all heads. Protective circles and red hems are woven into the garments.

The collection is inpired by Estonian mythological folklore and spiritually protective functions traditional clothing, such as red skirt hems. On one hand there is the desire for sunlight that is very present in the Estonian hemisphere, on the other hand a modern anxiety of climate change.

“The Sun Catchers” and “Sun Orb” is a collection of tufted rugs that speaks of an extatic dance in honour of the sun, because our homes yearn to express joy.

The Sun Catchers dance an eternal dance in honour of the sun. The time will come when they become one with the lifegiving celestial body.

The Sun Orb burns in the sky and gives warmth, gives life. The Orb brings light and colours into the room, for colours are borne out of light.

“The Body is a Temple”

Come, sit, and here you are a saint. You are part of an altar honouring yourself and your uniqueness. Here you are mighty. Nothing evil can get to you. You are protected.

Come, come into my embrace.

“The Body Is a Temple” examines the relationships between viewer and sacral object. One is far away and untouchable in the church, the other inviting and immediate. In one, the human is but a lowly sinner, in the other, uplifted to a saint.
